Local Dems Against Card Check Urge Lawmakers to Drop Support - The Orlando Sentinel

Two prominent local Democrats behind a new group formed to address public policy that affects business have sent a letter to members of Florida’s Congressional delegation urging them to drop their co-sponsorship and support of the Employee Free Choice Act.
The act (HR 1409) is also known as card check, one of the most polarizing labor vs. business fights in recent memory. The act — supported by the Obama administration, which was sent to the White House with the help of critical union support — is picking up more opposition from Democrats, who believe it goes too far in shifting the playing field in favor of unions.The act has a number of big problems that make it bad news for business. It takes away a guaranteed secret ballot vote on whether to organize by workers and puts rules in place for binding arbitration that could severely alter the workplace with a number of unintended consequences.
Roger Chapin and Joe Kefauver, who co-founded Floridians for Responsible Policy, said in the letter, “We think there are other ways that congress can make workplaces more accessible for elections and empower employees to more openly consider union membership that don’t violate core democratic values and sacrifice basic worker protections.”
